This is a flight by two UH-1N Huey helicopters operated by the United States Marine Corps 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. They are traveling from the USS Essex an Amphibious Assault Ship off Iwate Prefecture to the isolated and devastated island of Oshima in Miyagi Prefecture on April 5, 2011. This is all part of the US military's effort called Operation Tomodachi (Operation Friend). This huge relief effort was put into action shortly after the massive 9.0 magnitude quake that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Much of the humanitarian aid efforts has been completed and efforts have now shifted to recovery and reconstruction operations, including the search for the many thousands tsunami victims who are still missing.
