This view shows a rare glimpse in Tokyo during of the July 22, 2009 solar eclipse that passed over Eastern Asia and the Pacific region. Although Tokyo only experienced a 75% partial eclipse, with a total eclipse visible in Iwo Jima and a small chain of islands between Kyushu and Okinawa, the eclipse was almost impossible to see everywhere in Japan due to rain and cloud cover. This very rare view was made during a few brief seconds when the sun became visible at 12:04 PM Tokyo time. It was taken under the at the Otemon Gate which is part of the Edo Castle complex and the Imperial Palace. The circular objects on the left are roof tiles covering the gate and are classic feudal era architecture.
