This is the Meirinkan which was originally founded by the feudal lord Yoshimoto Mori of the Choshu Clan in 1719 on the outermost parts of the Hagi Castle. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was considered one of the finest schools in Japan for science and Western knowledge (Rangaku). In 1849 the school moved to it's present site and today functions as an elementary school for the city of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is one of the oldest original school structures in Japan...
