Restaurant in the old Naramachi district:..This is Mangyoku (left foreground), a relaxed and atmospheric Japanese izakaya restaurant that occupies a former geisha house in the Naramachi quarter of Nara. This establishment which combines three old Japanese town homes, with the center house built in 1742, is chocked full of history and reminders of years gone past. It is also the oldest example of architecture from the middle Edo period in the neighborhood. Opened 27 years ago by the Kinutani family, Mangyoku is named after the former geisha house that occupied the premises from 1872 to 1979. Food offered here is traditional Japanese dishes, served tapas style on antique dishes is matched by a full array of Japanese sake, shochu, and fully stocked cocktail bar. Great for dining or just hanging out to sip a few drinks, Mangyoku is a pleasant place to visit during evenings away from sightseeing Nara's temples and shrines.
