This is a demonstration of the training studio or martial arts style "dojo" at Toyota Motor Corp.'s Tahara plant in Aichi Prefecture. Here Lexus workers are trained to detect the smallest flaws and defects that robots and computers can't detect. Something like a martial arts class, this training is where workers are taught mental skills like how to gauge bolt tightening or how to insert parts on the line just right. They are also ranked by their skill level and are tested every four months for technique. These skill levels include: Master Craftsmen, Assistant Master Craftsmen, and Craftsmen. According to Toyota management, workers are trained for body and mind which is reflected in the quality of their product. Some of the training includes finger exercises with specially designed rubber nets (seen here), the arranging of colors patterns, and feeling tests while wearing cotton gloves. This is in addition to the classrooms training where workers are drilled on the concept of perfection. Besides the Lexus LS, GS and IS sedans manufactured here (hybrids included), Toyota also makes the Land Cruiser Prado, 4 Runner and RAV4 sport vehicles.
