Sanrikucho_Okirai_012.jpg

This is the seaside village of Sanrikucho Okirai which is part of Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture. What is so poignant about this village is that they had constructed a seawall to protect themselves from dangerous tsunami tidal waves. However the March 11, 2011 earthquake that struck Japan created a massive tidal wave that washed over this seawall and destroyed this town. Photo taken April 4, 2011 from a US Marine helicopter that was part of the US military's effort called Operation Tomodachi (Operation Friend). This huge relief effort was put into action shortly after the massive 9.0 magnitude quake that struck Japan..Japan, Tohoku, Misawa NAF, Iwate Prefecture, Aomori Prefecture, earthquake, Higashi Nihon Daishinsai, Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, quake, tsunami, tidal wave, natural disasters, US Military, United States Navy, United States Marines, 7th Fleet, Seventh Fleet, Pacific Ocean, Northern Japan, humanitarian relief, search and rescue, search and recovery, US Japan relations, helicopter, helo, chopper, CH-53E Sea Stallion, CH46E Seaknight, USS Essex, Amphibious Assault Ship, LCU, Landing Craft Utility, Naoto Kan, Japanese government, Operation Tomodachi, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit
