Fighters_Darvish_039.jpg

This is Yu Darvish, the 21 year old Japanese baseball pitching sensation who’s a starting pitcher for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Darvish is entering his fourth season with the team and is seen here during Spring training at the Fighters training camp in Nago City, Okinawa. Born in Japan on August 16, 1986 to an Iranian businessman and Japanese mother, Darvish caught the public’s eye after pitching a no hitter during the Koshien high school baseball tournament in 2004 during his senior year for Tohoku High School (and fourth year at Koshien). This led to him being pursued by both Japanese and the Major League teams and was drafted by the Fighters. Darvish is listed as 6'5" tall (196 cm) and 185 pounds (85 kg) and wears the number 11. Although there is much speculation he will one day move onto the Major Leagues, Darvish was quoted (during this interview) that he has no intentions of leaving Japan. He will also represent Japan in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Photo taken at the Nago Stadium in Nago City, Okinawa on February 23, 2008.
