Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are seen here during the national memorial service for war dead held annually at the Nippon Budokan hall in Tokyo on August 15, the anniversary of the end of World War II (for Japan). In addition to the Emperor, also in attendance was Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (his first time here as PM), as well several high ranking Japanese politicians, military officials, and most importantly Japanese WW II veterans and bereaved family members. This service remembers the 3.1 million Japanese who died during the war including both soldiers and civilians. According to government organizers, 4,776 family members attended the memorial this year on the 62nd anniversary of the end of WW II, August 15, 2007..
